DESCRIPTION:The Amore Valentine’s Day Concert kicks off our “Love is Love” Opera Project Season with songs inspired by Orpheus and Eurydice\, a timeless love story of passion\, courage\, and bittersweet endings. From Monteverdi and Gluck\, to Donizetti\, Puccini\, Bizet\, and our favorite tunes from Showboat\, West Side Story\, and more\, this musical evening will showcase something for everyone.  The night will close with some audience participation and a Jazz sing-along\, for a Valentine’s Day celebration not to be missed!  “Love is love” is a celebration that is inclusive of all sexualities and gender identities.\n \nWhether you are single\, part of a couple\, or want to celebrate with your amici (friends)\, we’ve got your Valentine’s Day COVERED! Featuring a cast of some of Boston’s most exciting vocalists\, join us for a whimsical evening of fan-favorite love (and sometimes heartbreak) themed arias\, duets\, jazz standards\, and originals at our annual Amore Concert. With a delicious menu and special cocktails by City Winery Boston\, this is a one-night only event not to be missed! \nFeatured Artists (clockwise from top left): Hosted by Leo Balkovets (Tenor)\, featuring special guests Nina Evelyn Anderson (Soprano)\, Mary Kray (Mezzo)\, and NEMPAC Faculty member\, Harriet Hung (Piano). \n \n  \nLeo Balkovetz\nLeo Balkovetz\, Tenor\, is a performer and librettist in the Boston area. Born the middle child in a military family\, Leo spent his early life moving all around the country. He received a Bachelor’s in Vocal Performance from Georgia State University in 2015. He spent the year as an assistant in a Middle School choir\, teaching private voice lessons to the young and young at heart alike before moving to Boston in 2016. There\, he  attended The Longy School of Music at Bard College and graduated with a Master’s in Historical Performance in 2018. He has called Boston home ever since.  \nLeo’s musical practice spans from singing Renaissance sacred motets all the way to modern opera. He has performed in the world premieres of Reap What You Soul (Guy) and The Bedbug (The Reporter) with Promenade Opera Project\, the world premiere of NIGHTTOWN (Buck Mulligan) with Lowell House Opera\, and a touring production of Mr. Twister (Bobby)\, an opera for children. As an oratorio soloist\, Leo has performed across the commonwealth in Handel’s Messiah\, Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass\, and Beethoven’s Mass in C. \nAs a writer\, Leo penned the libretto for Quinn Gutman’s Violetta\, a queer re-telling of Verdi’s La traviata\, and a modern treatment of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito for Opera del West’s 2023 season. When not singing and writing\, Leo can often be found listening to Steely Dan or watching bees in his flower garden. \nNina Evelyn Anderson\nHailed as “powerful” and “ready for primetime\,” Black American soprano Nina Evelyn’s mission is to diversify the classical music canon by promoting and performing the works of Black composers. Upcoming performances include singing the role of Monisha in Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and a concert with Heritage Chorale featuring the music of Florence Price and Margaret Bonds. In 2022\, Nina triumphed in her mainstage debut with Boston Conservatory at Berklee as the title role in Floyd’s Susannah\, a production that was named a “standout performance of 2022 in Boston” by WBUR radio. Previous engagements include performances as Contessa Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro with Boston Conservatory\, Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen with Opera North\, and Ms. Chen in the world premiere of Jorge Sosa’s Monkey: A Kung Fu Puppet Parable. Nina is a recent graduate of Boston Conservatory at Berklee where she received her Master of Music in Opera Performance. \nHarriet Hung\nAs an educator\, violist/violinist\, pianist and singer Harriet Hung is a Boston based private music instructor with 10 years of teaching experience in viola/violin\, piano and singing. Having taught students from ages 5 to 50\, she believes “Being the best friend with students and growing with them\, is the best way leading them to the world of musical aesthetics.” Harriet Hung holds a Master of Music degree from Longy School of Music and Bachelor of Art Degree in National Hsinchu University of Education Department of Music (Taiwan). \nMary Kray\nMary Kray (she/her) is a mezzo-soprano and voice teacher based in Boston\, Massachusetts\, with a diverse performance background spanning opera\, oratorio\, musical theater\, neo-soul\, and pop. Notably\, Mary has performed as Marcellina in NEMPAC’s recent production of Le Nozze di Figaro and in the chorus of Boston Lyric Opera’s updated production of Madama Butterfly. She has performed as the alto soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria\, Bach’s Magnificat\, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony\, and Handel’s Messiah. \nAs a member of the Choir of the New Jerusalem at Church on the Hill\, Mary recently covered the role of Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. She eagerly anticipates covering Carmen with Boston Opera Collaborative in their upcoming production of La Tragédie de Carmen. Outside classical realms\, Mary is a singer-songwriter for Trust in the Sun\, a neo-soul band in Las Vegas\, and she also writes and produces experimental vocal music as SomethinSweet. Additionally\, she hosts the podcast Music on Mushrooms\, dedicated to dismantling harmful rhetoric in creative spaces. \nAlongside her private teaching studio\, Mary has taught music and voice at Arlington Children’s Theater\, Boston Conservatory’s Vocal Choral Intensive\, and Beverly Music Academy. As a proponent of new music\, Mr. Berg has premiered works at Diffrazioni multimedia festival in Florence Italy\, and NYC Electroacoustic Music Festival by composers from around the world. Aside from performing\, Mr. Berg has held teaching positions at NYU Steinhardt and Boston University. Mr. Berg received his DMA from Boston University as a student of Bayla Keyes\, and earned his MM and BA from New York University and Luther College respectively.

Both professors at Berklee College of music and with awards such as the ASCAP Young Composers Award and John Lennon Songwriting Contest under their belts\, Caio e Jess provide an ethereal\, unique and immersive show of virtuosic electricity with either full band or duo. Located on the Freedom Trail\, next to the Paul Revere Statue and just behind Old North Church\, passersby\, neighbors\, and friends can catch singers performing. \nDate: Saturday\, October 26th | Time: 2 PM – 4 PM \nWhere: The Prado\, Paul Revere Mall\, Hanover Street\, Boston\, MA 02113 \n\n\n\n\n \nKelley Hollis\nKelley Hollis is a classically trained soprano celebrated for her interpretations of new and lesser-known works. Notable performances include Rosner’s Requiem with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a concert at Prague Castle with the Americké jaro festival. She holds degrees from Northwestern University and Boston University’s Opera Institute. Her opera credits include roles such as Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus\, Mimi in La bohème\, and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. Kelley has performed at Boston Symphony Hall and has been recognized by the Metropolitan Opera National Council. She regularly performs with Boston Baroque\, Boston Lyric Opera\, and Juventas New Music Ensemble. \n\n\n\n \nMelanie Rucinski\nMelanie Rucinski is a Boston-based freelance pianist and accompanist. She has performed with the Cambridge Community Chorus\, NEMPAC Opera Project\, and Metropolitan Chorale. Previously\, she was a collaborative pianist for the Boston Children’s Chorus and the A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training. Melanie is a choral singer and oboist\, having cofounded and conducted the Lambda Singers chamber choir at Harvard. She is currently the accompanist for the Jameson Singers and a Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, teaching statistics and quantitative methods. \n\n\n\n \nDavid Rivera Bozón\nDavid Rivera Bozón\, a Colombian tenor based in Boston\, is recognized internationally for his extraordinary talent and warm personality. He has performed extensively in opera\, stageworks\, zarzuela\, oratorio\, concerts\, recitals\, and in unconventional venues\, bringing his music to a wide variety of communities. David has been recognized by the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives for his outstanding contributions to cultural and arts events and for promoting the Italian Heritage in the United States. He is currently pursuing studies at the Boston University Opera Institute. His album “The Ancestral Call\,” inspired by the Bribri indigenous culture\, won the Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards and was featured in NPR’s Best Alternative Latin Music of 2023\, Jazziz Editor’s Choice\, NBC New York\, and People en Español. Notable jazz musicians such as George Garzone and Francisco Mela contributed to the project. José has toured nationally and internationally\, sharing stages with artists like Luciana Souza\, Francisco Mela\, Danilo Perez\, and Eddie Daniels. He currently teaches at Berklee College in Massachusetts.\n\n \n\n\nABOUT MARIA AMALIA QUESADA:  Singer\, Cultural Manager\, and Educator. Maria Amalia currently lives in Boston\, Massachusetts. She started studying music in Costa Rica at a very young age. Maria Amalia has collaborated and sung with artists such as Danilo Pérez\, Jason Yeager\, Patricia Zarate\, Vardan Ovsepian\, Fernando Huergo\, Tatiana Parra\, Lihi Haruvi\, Connor Kent\, Jacob Jezioro\, Jacob Means\, Daniel Patiño Quintana\, Humberto Vargas\, among others. She had shaped her talent under the guidance of Sofia Rei\, Roxana Amed\, Dominique Eade\, and Rebecca Shrimpton. \nAs a singer and composer\, she co-founded with pianist Jose Soto Bosquejo en Riesgo. This creative music project uses experimentation and improvisation in various genres\, from Latin American folklore to jazz. The group’s music conveys the multicultural experience of these expanding musicians\, approaching different audiences through original compositions and arrangements from the Latin American imaginary. The group has performed in Costa Rica\, Boston\, Cambridge\, USA\, and in festivals in Mexico and Panama. \n\nAs Cultural Manager\, Maria Amalia is co-founder of the Fundacion Armonia Colectiva and Executive Director of the International Jazz Festival of Costa Rica FIJAZZ. She has given different workshops and lectures on cultural management on national and international levels. She also debuted the role of Rosie in At Love’s Hearth\, a musical thesis project written by Stephanie Hollenberg\, Harvard alum. \nJustine’s teaching studio consists of 40+ students of all genres and ages. She holds teaching positions at Amy Dancz Music Studio and North End Music Performing Arts (NEMPAC). \nWhile not singing\, Justine enjoys yoga\, dancing\, baking\, and trying new restaurants with her husband\, Eli. \nJuan Suarez (Baritone): \nBaritone\, Juan Suarez\, is a well established performer in the Boston area\, performing frequently with organizations such as Odyssey Opera\, MassOpera\, Opera Del West\, Boston Opera & Zarzuela\, and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. \nNotable engagements include world music premieres with Catalyst new music in collaboration with Poet Todd Hearon and Composer Jonathan Mitchell; and with Sparks & Wiry Cries in New York City\, premiering an original poem set to music by Composer Laura Nevitt. Juan can also be heard singing in the chorus of Boston Modern Opera Project’s Grammy nominated recording of The Lord of Cries\, written by composer John Corigliano and librettist Mark Adamo. \nRecent and Upcoming engagements include performances as bass soloist in G.F Handel’s Messiah \, an upcoming role debut as Falke in Johann Strauss’ comic Operetta\, Die Fledermaus\, and his third consecutive production with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras in their performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Grand Opera\, Don Carlos.\n \nJuan holds Music Degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and Stetson University. \nMariangela Gominho (Soprano): \nMariangela Gominho\, Soprano\, is a singer and voice teacher based in Boston\, Massachusetts. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from Duquesne University and Master’s degree in Vocal Pedagogy at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. \nDuring her undergraduate studies\, she performed as Suor Genevieve in Suor Angelica and covered the role of Belinda in Dido and Aeneas\, as well as participated in programs at the Franco American Vocal Academy and New England Conservatory’s Summer Opera Studio. \nAs a language lover\, Mariangela has experience performing in various languages\, from Portuguese to Tagalog to Icelandic. In 2016\, she was the first music performance major to receive the prestigious Honors Endowed Fellows Grant at Duquesne University. With the grant\, she studied Icelandic folk and classical music in Iceland and presented the pieces in a public lecture-recital. \nMariangela is the music director of St. Benedict’s Parish in Somerville\, and holds teaching positions at Winsor School\, Cheverus Catholic School\, and Amy Dancz Voice Studio. She also maintains her own private studio. \nWhen not making music\, Mariangela enjoys crafting\, traveling\, and dragging friends to spin class. \nSepehr Davallou (Pianist) \nSepehr is a pianist and vocal coach based in Boston. He has served as an assistant music director for the production of Gluck’s Orfeo at NEMPAC\, and worked as pianist on such productions as Britten’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Miami Music Festival\, “Die Fledermaus” and “Die Zauberflöte” at NEC and also Maryland Opera Studio. \nPassionate about text\, poetry and artsong\, he has appeared on five Liederabend series at NEC spanning repertoire from Mozart to folk and contemporary music. \nHe has attended the Aspen Music Festival\, “Dandelion Opera Institute”\, and “Collaborative Pianist Institute” where he got to work with renowned artists such as Martin Katz\, and Warren Jones. \nSepehr has a BM in Piano Performance from University of Tehran\, an MM in Collaborative Piano from University of Maryland and a Graduate Diploma in Opera Coaching from New England Conservatory.  His mentors are Cameron Stowe\, JJ Penna\, Tanya Blaich and Rita Sloan.

SUMMARY:Persian Songs Old + New - Sold Out!
DESCRIPTION:Please note this concert is SOLD OUT! \nPart of NEMPAC’s collaborative new Artist Series\, Vanessa Naghdi\, Fred Springer\, and Sepehr Davallou will present Persian Songs Old + New\, a concert featuring well-known Persian songs as well as new and contemporary songs by Persian composers. This concert will amplify the voices of this underrepresented group\, bringing awareness\, understanding\, and the celebration of different cultures. \nThe beauty in Persian culture is that it spans centuries of time—and throughout its history—has been connected to all generations\, both in the past and now in the present. Vanessa Naghdi is half-Persian and much of her family is from Iran.  Sepehr Davallou is an Iranian citizen living and working in Boston\, having just finished graduate studies at New England Conservatory. There is a sizable Persian community in the Boston area who greatly appreciate and support the arts\, music\, and literature\, as these areas of artistic expression are so much a part of Persian culture. The melodies and texts presented in this concert will present beautiful songs that can be connected to—and understood by—anyone and everyone\, bringing together different people from diverse communities. \nBy presenting this concert at the Bijou de la Vida Gallery\, owned by Iranian art collector Ramin Khoshatefeh\, these artists will present an immersive experience surrounded by many pieces of Persian artwork. After graduating\, Gabe served a four-year active duty tour in the US Army Band at Fort Bragg in North Carolina\, before coming back home to Boston and joining the 215th National Guard Army Band of Massachusetts while pursuing a master’s degree in materials science and engineering at Boston University. He is now a Sargent First-Class in the 215th Army Band and works as an engineer for the US Department of Transportation. Gabe’s favorite ice cream is Cherry Garcia and he rarely bowls above 100. \n \n\n     \nJon Polit\nPiano\nJon is a native Bostonian\, multi-instrumentalist\, and recovering clarinetist. He’s been a fixture of the New England music scene for the past 15+ years\, playing everything from multi-stage folk festivals to intimate chamber music concerts. Though his current focus is jazz piano\, he strives to incorporate this breadth of experience to each new project. \n \n\n     \nWill Mabuza\nBass\nBorn in Somerville\, Massachusetts\, bassist William Mabuza has dedicated his time and passion into the understanding and development of jazz\, Soul music and contemporary art. His heroes include the likes of John Coltrane\, Miles Davis\, Cecil Taylor\, and all of those who desired to push music beyond the conventional limits of what was thought possible. As a 2023 graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music\, William has studied under the mentorship of notable artists such as Cecil Mcbee\, Dave Holland\, Nasheet Waits\, and Jason Moran\, among others\, in pursuit of his own musical prowess and evolution. Choosing to speak the musical tradition through jazz and free improvisation\, he hopes to one day carry the lineage of those who inspired his journey. \n \n\n     \nMark Valdes\nDrums\nMark Valdes is a drummer\, educator\, and composer based in Los Angeles who has performed at venues and festivals across The United States sharing the stage with world-class artists such as John Daversa\, Poncho Sanchez\, Bob Mintzer\, Barbara Morrison\, Gordon Goodwin\, Wayne Bergeron\, and Vardan Ovsepian. DESCRIPTION:Mercedes Escobar is a Boston-based Guatemalan singer-songwriter performing Latin Americana. From playing bars in Guatemala since her early teens\, until a chance encounter changed everything – when a fan in the audience encouraged her to apply to Berklee\, leading to a scholarship opportunity. After graduating with honors in 2024\, she quickly earned a nomination for Latin Artist of the Year at the Boston Music Awards. Her upcoming album (fall 2025) features collaborations with multiple Grammy-winner Gaby Moreno\, blues icon Joe Bonamassa\, Fabiola Mendez and Luis Conte. Other roles include Eisenstein\, Sid\, King Melchior\, Peter\, Count Almaviva\, Marco\, Der Sprecher\, Motorcycle Cop/Guard 1\, and Don Giovanni. \n\n \n\n\n \nNaré Kim\, soprano\nKorean soprano Naré Kim (she/her)\, acclaimed for her “highly expressive phrasing” and “shimmering warmth of sound\,” has performed with MassOpera\, Boston Singers’ Resource\, and Korea National Opera. Her roles include Morgana\, Sidonie\, Night\, Zerlina\, Hanna\, Musetta\, and Mimì. She holds degrees from Seoul National University and was an Apprenticeship Artist at San Diego Opera. She earned first prize in the La Jolla Symphony Young Artist Competition and second prize in the Virginia Hawk Competition. \n\n \n\n\n \nJacob LyteHaven\, pianist\nJacob LyteHaven (he/him) holds degrees in Piano and Vocal Performance from Stetson University and a Master of Music in Collaborative Piano from Boston University. Her work has been recognized by the Boston Globe\, OperaWire\, WBUR\, and Bachtrack; and in 2021\, the Eastman School of Music named her one of the “Outstanding Eastman Women” of the year for her innovative digital production of Hänsel und Gretel. Her recent projects include an immersive production of Die Fledermaus\, and a recital with graphics and animations created by Larisa. \n\n\n\n \nJulian Gau\, pianist\nJulian Gau (he/him) is a pianist and conductor based in Boston. While this is his debut with NEMPAC Opera Project\, he has performed in concert with Opera on Tap\, Boston Summer Opera\, and West End Lyric. As a opera conductor\, he has served as music director for The Pirates of Penzance with Boston Summer Opera\, Alcina with MassOpera\, Die Fledermaus with The Opera Company\, Katie the Strongest of the Strong with Opera Saratoga\, and Cabaret at Brown University. He has also served as assistant conductor and coach for Is This America? with White Snake Projects\, as well as Don Giovanni and Rigoletto with Boston Summer Opera. Born in the United States from Italian parents\, she holds a dual-citizenship and is an active musician in music scenes all over the world. Her unique programs include a variety of diverse music\, including music from Europe\, African music\, music from South America\, music written by women\, world premieres\, and music written for her. She began playing at the age of 4\, and at a young age\, she started competing in and winning local competitions. In 2022\, she was one of the only classical guitarists to win 1st prize in the New York Laureate International Music Competition. In 2021\, she won 1st prize in the Twisted Spruce International Music Competition.  In 2019\, she won 1st prize in the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Competition\, and performed in Amsterdam and Salzburg in the winner’s concert tour. She has performed in numerous venues around the world as a guest soloist\, including the Mozarteum University in Salzburg\, Austria\, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam\, Netherlands\, among others. In total\, Marisa has performed in 5 continents around the world and over 25 countries as a featured solo performer.

The program features sarswela (Filipino opera)\, kundiman (Filipino art songs)\, and timeless Western works\, offering a unique musical journey that bridges cultures. \nThe kundiman—Philippine art songs with themes of love\, patriotism\, and resilience—has been a voice for generations\, from Spanish colonial times to modern struggles for freedom. Recent roles include Frasquita in Carmen\, The Queen of the Night (cover) in The Magic Flute and Deb in the contemporary musical Ordinary Days. In 2023 she was commissioned to record her debut solo album “Sing a Song of Seasons\,” a song cycle of 24 songs by Robert Rogler in the iconic GBH Fraser Performance Studio. Lauren is passionate about the study of Filipino Classical music and co-founded Duo Filipino\, an ensemble committed to sharing Filipino culture and history through Filipino classical music. Lauren was a Finalist and Encouragement Award recipient in Opera Connecticut’s 2025 American Opera Idol Competition and a Semi-Finalist in the 2021 Perfect Day Music Competition. She holds a Bachelor’s in Vocal Performance from DePaul University and a Master’s in Vocal Performance from the Longy School of Music. \n\n\n  \n\n\nABOUT CARLO BUNYI: \nFilipino baritone Carlo Bunyi is a Boston-based soloist and teacher whose craft and stylistic versatility has led him to explore a diversified range of musical activities. \nRecent performances include Monterone in Rigoletto\, Don Giovanni in Don Giovanni\, Tonio in I Pagliacci\, and Frank in Die Fledermaus. \nHe holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Music Education from the Longy School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Voice from the University of Santo Tomas. \nCarlo is the music teacher at South Boston Catholic Academy and currently a cantor at the Divine Mercy Parish in Quincy\, MA. \n\n\n  \n\n\nABOUT MARCELLINE MERRILL: \nAfter her first heart surgery at the age of nine\, Marceline Merrill found companionship and solace at the piano. This lead to her emotionally dynamic playing based in rich tonal colors and story telling. As a testament to her beloved craft\, Marceline holds over 40 distinctions from her smalltown home to international competitions. \nMrs. Merrill performs regionally and across the nation as a soloist and collaborator. She prioritizes curating programs that engage her audiences with underrepresented works alongside the classics. Some highlights from this season include an interview published in the American Music Teacher magazine performance at the New Gallery Concert Series\, a performance and lecture at the Music Teacher National Association Conference\, and a recording of a solo album. \nMarceline also volunteer regionally and nationally to develop the field of piano education with organizations like the Music Teacher National Association\, the New England Piano Teacher Association\, and the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy.

DESCRIPTION:The North End Music & Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) is proud to present its Annual Performathon\, a five-hour fundraising concert supporting NEMPAC’s tuition assistance and educational programs for students of all ages and abilities. \nThis year’s event will take place at Urban Wild in Hood Park. Audiences will enjoy inspiring performances by NEMPAC students and faculty while helping expand access to high-quality music and arts education. All proceeds support need-based students through discounted tuition for private lessons\, group classes\, and summer programs. \nPerformances will feature students from NEMPAC’s private music instruction\, dance\, and musical theater programs\, as well as school partnership initiatives\, alongside faculty artists.
