Our Mission: Our mission is to provide affordable arts-related programming to residents of the North End/Waterfront and the surrounding neighborhoods. By encouraging participation in the arts, we hope to strengthen relationships within the community and to enhance public safety.
Who We Are: The North End Music and Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) is a private, non-profit corporation operating in the North End/Waterfront neighborhood of the City of Boston.

What We Offer:

  • 10-week long courses (4 sessions per year) in music, drama, yoga, and Italian language for toddlers, children, and adults.
  • Music instruction (voice, piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, french horn, saxophone, percussion) for children and adults.
  • Community theater program for teenagers and young adults.
  • Community outreach programs and events to foster neighborhood participation in the arts.

Our Location:
Thanks to the George Robert White Fund and the efforts of many in the extended NEMPAC family, the expansion of the NEMPAC offices and practice spaces is complete. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

NEMPAC headquarters are on the Paul Revere Mall, between Hanover St. and Unity St. near Old North Church. We are close to the Haymarket and North Station stops on the Orange and Green lines. NEMPAC also validates parking at the Haymarket Garage (P4, Parcel 7 Garage on this map), up to 3 hours for $3.

Organization: NEMPAC is run by a volunteer Board of Directors. Day to day operations are performed by a paid Executive Director and Private Music Instruction Coordinator. Courses and private music instruction are delivered by paid contractors.

Census: As of March 2009, we had 50 students receiving private music instruction from six instructors. We also had 74 children and 16 adults enrolled in seven courses taught by six instructors.

Needs:

  • Scholarship Funding: To attract the highest-caliber instructors coming out of master’s degree programs at The New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, The Longy School, etc., we compensate our private music instructors at market rates. Many families in our neighborhood struggle to pay for private music lessons at market rates, and each year we offer as many scholarships as we possibly can. We also offer scholarships to individuals seeking to participate in NEMPAC courses.
  • Fixtures and Equipment : NEMPAC anticipates a City-funded, City-managed expansion and renovation to its headquarters building in 2007. This project will increase the number of lessons and classes we can run in our headquarters building, but it will also generate a need for new teaching supplies and classroom fixtures.
  • Community Theater Program: In 2009, NEMPAC’s Act I Players will produce their fifth full-scale theatrical production. This is an exciting program that brings adults and teenagers from different families together in cast and crew. Neighborhood attendance at the plays is very high, and we keep the ticket price low in order to assure this. Everyone gets in on the act, from moms who help with costuming and cast meals, to the elderly who queue up for seats and laugh in all the right places. Sponsors are needed to keep this program going.
  • NEMPAC gratefully accepts donations to its general fund, and restricted gifts to its scholarship fund, building fund, and community theater program.
