NEMPAC’s 5th-anniversary production was Rossini’s La Cenerentola.! The production was performed in Italian, fully staged and with chamber orchestra from June 23rd-June 26th, 2016 (4 performances). Performances were held at Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall, The Great Hall and Christopher Columbus Park. Rehearsals started mid-May, 2016.

Synopsis: Once upon a time, there was a king, a trusty valet, and a philosopher. All who conspired to find the prince a bride.

NEMPAC Opera Project celebrated its 5th Anniversary Season with Rossini’s La Cenerentola, performed in Faneuil Hall’s majestic Great Hall from June 23-25. Loosely based on the classic fairytale, La Cenerentola turns the standard story on its head, complete with an evil stepfather, bouts of mistaken identity, and most of all, the triumph of goodness.

Drawing on inspiration from the Great Hall, this opera asked the questions: Can we overcome our circumstances and rise to our true potential? Can our wildest dreams become reality?

NEMPAC Opera Project History

Founded in 2012, the mission of the NEMPAC Opera Project is to serve Boston’s artistic community of singers, instrumentalists and artistic staff, as well as the general public by providing affordable opera in urban Boston.

In an effort to challenge the boundaries of what a theatre space “has” to be, the NEMPAC Opera Project has sought to use exclusively non-traditional spaces. In our first year, we took the provocative work of Bizet’s Carmen to St. Paul’s Cathedral in downtown Boston. Thanks to the support of the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park, we have been able to provide a free, community outreach performance of each opera production to our community.

In 2013, we performed Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in Boston’s Faneuil Hall. Die Fledermaus, NEMPAC Opera ProjectThe production was so successful in this space, that we were delighted to bring our 2014, English production of Die Fledermaus to Faneuil Hall’s – The Great Hall. This magnificent venue has now become the performance home for the NEMPAC Opera Project.

In the last three years, we have had over 5000 people come to see our NEMPAC Opera Productions, some being exposed to opera for the first time! We’ve also been able to provide over 200 local singers, directors, and musicians the professional experiences in our productions.
