SUMMARY:Traditional Irish Quartet: The Ivy Leaf
DESCRIPTION:July 28: Initially formed by Lindsay Straw (bouzouki\, guitar\, vocals) as a way to explore her own interest in the interconnected streams of folk music in Ireland\, Britain\, and America\, the Ivy Leaf is now a young stalwart of traditional Irish music in Boston\, featuring Caroline O’Shea (flute\, whistle\, vocals)\, Armand Aromin (fiddle\, whistle)\, and Dan Accardi (fiddle\, concertina). The members’ diverse backgrounds in Berklee College of Music\, AllIreland Fleadh Cheoil competitions\, and the rich Irish culture of Boston combine to produce a sound that is “vibrant and surefooted\, and tailored to fully reveal each tune’s character and personality” (Sean Smith\, Boston Irish Reporter). The Ivy Leaf has been featured at prestigious local venues such as Club Passim in Cambridge\, the Irish Ceilidh Club of Rhode Island\, and the New England Folk Festival. \n\nAs part of our 15th Anniversary Performance Season\, we are excited to continue our July Thursday Night Series supported by NorthEndBoston.com\, Boston Parks Dept.\, I AM Books and the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. \nSeries partners include I AM Books and the Mayor’s Office of Special Events\, City of Boston. Stefano Marchese: Series Director. \nChildren’s Programming: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.\nConcerts are free and open to the public\n(Rain location: St. Stephen’s Church)

SUMMARY:Jazz Night with Sounds of Italy: Scanzonati
DESCRIPTION:Sounds of Italy is a musical festival celebrating Italian music excellence in the Greater Boston area. The inventive and contemporary vision of young Italian talents living in the United States blends with the rhythmic and harmonic roots of the Bel Paese\, with a clear American jazz influence — a mix that generates a new way of making \nmusic. A concept developed by Pescara-native singer and composer Stefano Marchese\, Sounds of Italy was made possible with the collaboration and support of big names on the international music scene such as Marco Pignataro\, Andrea Pejrolo\, and Tino D’Agostino\, as well as the Consul General of Italy in Boston\, and Bostoniano founder Nicola Orichuia. Since its first edition\, more than 200 artists have participated to the past 3 editions\, including international artists such as Chiara Civello\, Riccardo Del Fra and George Garzone. The audience members will be offered a taste of the elective affinities of the Mediterranean spirit mixed in with the innovative outlook of jazz. \nChildren’s Programming: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.\n(rain location: St Stephen’s Church)

SUMMARY:Swing Favorites in the Park: Eight to the Bar
DESCRIPTION:Listening to Eight to the Bar is a lot like driving along a time-warped highway precisely halfway between Count Basie’s Kansas City and Fats Waller’s Harlem\, where the car radio picks up everything from Jumpin’ at the Woodside to The Andrews Sisters. Their material\, like their outlandish wardrobes and onstage choreo\, is a colorful mix of forties jazz and swing\, fifties jump blues\, and their own swing-influenced tunes. With their female vocals\, saxophone (their sax player\, Collin Tilton is the original sax and flute player In Van Morrison’s band\, and appears on Morrison’s quadruple-platinum-selling Moondance album)\, guitar\, bass\, keyboards and drums\, this unique sextet pack a musical and visual wallop not seen in New England since the group’s inception in 1975. Since that time they have released 12 CDs and have excited audiences from Europe to the Caribbean. The band has been named “Best Band 2014” by Hartford Magazine and recently had the honor of touring the Republic of Georgia (near Russia) at the invitation of the U.S. Embassy there. Currently the group has just released its 12th CD\,Bring It & Swing It! (rain date / location: Tues July 26th\, The Prado)
