Jason Wang

Croft School Strings Ensemble Program Director & Viola Instructor

Wei-Hsiang (Jason) Wang is a Taiwanese musician with a storytelling approach to teaching music, which helps evoke each person’s unique voice in a musical form. He is fascinated by all the genes of music and how music is connected to people’s minds. Jason’s artistic goal is to use the power of his instrument-playing to advocate and empower the uniqueness of each person.

There are various stages in his musical journey, as he grew up learning the Suzuki method on the violin and has always enjoyed playing music as a hobby. He always knew the stage was where he belonged, so aside from many hours of practice, he was participating in the orchestra, string quartet, and weekly private lessons. He would take out his instrument and play on the stage whenever he seized the chance to stand in the spotlight. During his high school years, he formed a rock band, being the lead vocalist, singing cover songs from One OK Rock, Muse, and Guns’ N’ Roses to fulfill his unlimited desire for performing.

At the age of 19, he came to the United States and started his professional music career when he was offered a full scholarship to study at the University of Southern Mississippi. During his undergraduate studies, he was highly influenced by the Blue Jazz culture from New Orleans and picked up some improvisation skills. In his senior year, his Carnegie Hall debut with the USM chorale and chamber orchestra, collectively performing the U.S. Premiere of Moorland Elegies by Tõnu Kõrvits. For his postgraduate studies, he was offered an assistantship in Fort Worth to study at Texas Christian University with a Master’s degree in viola performance.

From 2021-23, he was given a full scholarship to study at Carnegie Mellon University School of Music. During his time pursuing an Advanced Music Certificate at Carnegie Mellon University, not only did he study more in-depth musical studies in classical instrumental playing, but he was indulged in the digital sonic world by performing violin acoustically (amplified) with the synthetic sounds and groove of soundtracks based on the vibration of the transducers.

On top of the benefits of the resourceful music program that CMU has, he also learned audio mixing and sound recording. Meanwhile, he managed to be on the list of 6 regional orchestras around Pittsburgh. He is now based in the Boston area with his just-married wife and three cats. He is excited about the infinite possibilities of the new musical opportunities that await him and is ready to start a new chapter of his musical journey in Boston.
