Thompson Wang

Croft School Violin Instructor

Thompson Wang started playing violin at the age of 4. As a Dean’s Scholarship recipient, Thompson earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music at New England Conservatory of Music studying with Ayano Ninomiya and Donald Weilerstein.  Thompson is currently pursuing a Graduate Diploma with Donald Weilerstein. Prior to NEC, Thompson studied with Almita and Roland Vamos at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy as a scholarship recipient. Thompson was a student of the Colburn School before moving to Chicago.

Thompson is a member of the Sona Quartet, who was named the New England Conservatory’s Honors Group in 2022. Thompson won the Gold medal at the Fischoff Chamber Competition, M-Prize International Chamber Competition in Michigan, the Barnett Chamber competition, the Rembrandt Chamber Competition and Silver Medal at the Saint Paul String Quartet Competition as part of the Kairos String Quartet. The Kairos String Quartet was also featured on NPR’s popular show, From the Top.

During the 2016-2017 season, Thompson was selected as a Finalist in Crain-Maling Chicago Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition and performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He has performed in venues throughout the world such as Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Center, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Symphony Hall in Boston, the National Concert Hall in Taiwan and the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Thompson is currently playing on a 1827 Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume generously loaned to him by the Chi-Mei Cultural Foundation in Taiwan.
