Community outreach through the arts fosters a sense of belonging, enhances well-being, and celebrates the rich life experiences that each individual brings to the table. As part of its mission to enrich lives through accessible, exceptional arts programs, NEMPAC is deepening its roots in the North End by hosting more programs for adults ages 55+ in collaboration with the Nazzaro Community Center.
Part of this outreach has included expanding its partnership with the Boston Center for Youth and Families by hosting senior classes and workshops, as well as hosting instrumental lessons at its North End location at 9 Hull Street.
This past fall, NEMPAC instructor Steve Allen taught a series of three beginner ukulele classes which welcomed 10 local beginning musicians to the studio. Steve mentions how he “appreciates helping students learn to play the music they love. In just a few classes we can learn to play some of our favorite songs. The ukulele is a great place to start for people who have never played an instrument before. The students bring some wonderful experiences to the classes and we have a lot of fun!”
In addition to ukulele, NEMPAC hosted a Musical Bingo and Paint Night at the Nazzaro Center for the 55+ age group in collaboration with Laurel Greenfield Art, along with a disco themed dance class with NEMPAC faculty and North End resident dancer, Samantha Mirrer.
“This community outreach is more than just a program – it’s an opportunity for seniors to continue growing, engaging with each other, and finding joy around them. Thanks to our supporters and collaborators who also believe in our mission and ability to transform lives through the arts – we have built a strong organizational foundation that can sustain this programming – and we look forward to what is to come!” – Sherri Snow, Executive Director of NEMPAC.
Most recently NEMPAC has offered an “Opera: Listen and Learn” series hosted on February 4th and 11th, 2025. These workshops included history and highlights of this 400-year-old art form, with a presentation and live performances of some of opera’s most beloved pieces, led by Dr. Pamela Feo, and supported by musicians Harriet Hung, Kendra Comstock, and Justine Boonstra. Be on the lookout for our future programming for Seniors and the 55+ community as well as NEMPAC’s renewed commitment to expanding its footprint in the North End and finding more designated community space for arts & culture.
